A sprinter with family ties to champion Black Caviar has claimed a stakes win of his own at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

The Tony McEvoy-trained Iconic returned with a win in the Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m), defeating the Peter Moody-trained Angels Beach by the barest of margins with comeback mare Angelic Light doing her best work late along the rail to finish a length away third.

Four-year-old gelding Iconic ($10) had been Group placed behind star sprinter Lankan Rupee in the autumn but his win in the Carlyon was his first at stakes level.

And McEvoy believes it will not be his last.

“If you look at his legs you would walk past him. He’s got very bent legs but hasn’t had a day’s unsoundness,” McEvoy said.

“He’s got more of these nice races in him.”

Iconic is by Black Caviar’s sire Bel Esprit out of the mare Davavia who is a half-sister to Black Caviar’s mother Helsinge.

McEvoy was concerned Iconic was going into the race off one trial, but the sprinter’s jockey Nick Hall was confident and was proven right.

Iconic came from midfield and just held off Angels Beach on his inside with Angelic Light turning in a pleasing first-up run having not raced since May last year.

Favourite Shamal Wind ($4), previously unbeaten first-up, was closing late for fourth.

McEvoy plans to bring Iconic back to Moonee Valley in a fortnight for the Group Two McEwen Stakes where he would meet Lankan Rupee.

Iconic was second to Lankan Rupee in the Rubiton Stakes in the autumn and finished well back in the star sprinter’s Oakleigh Plate a couple of weeks later.

“I hope he goes somewhere else, Lankan Rupee,” McEvoy said.

“But he (Iconic) is a good sprinter and there’s not many other places I can go with him.

“I have got options in Sydney if Lankan Rupee looked too strong.”

Bel Sprinter Wins The Group One Galaxy

Written by AAPSaturday, 30 March 2013 16:45

Victorian galloper Bel Sprinter has produced a last-to-first finish to claim the Group One Galaxy at Rosehill.

After his chances were seemingly dashed when he missed the start by two lengths, Bel Sprinter unwound a punishing sprint to deny Snitzerland in the $350,000 race.

“I’m just thrilled because we’ve put a lot of work into this horse and it’s been frustrating at times,” trainer Jason Warren said.

In one of the strongest renewals of the sprint, Bel Sprinter went close to the Rosehill track record after the leaders set a frenetic tempo.

Snitzerland made the running and finished second with comeback sprinter Decision Time taking third.

Warren said Bel Sprinter had earned an extended Sydney stay and a clash with the unbeaten mare Black Caviar in the T J Smith Stakes at Randwick on April 13.

“Someone’s got to run second,” he said.

The race was run without Unpretentious who was scratched at the barrier after rearing in the starting stalls.

2013 The Galaxy – Bel sprints past them

trainer Jason Warren celebrated his first Group I victory when Bel Sprinter unleashed a devastating turn of foot after missing the start to win Saturday’s Group I The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill.

“That was unbelievable. In these big races he always misses the start. Kerrin (McEvoy) just played it cool before getting to the outside and letting rip,” Warren said.

The trainer paid tribute to his vets as the five-year-old has undergone surgery following a mixed spring campaign.

“I’ve got to pay credit to my vets. This horse has had throat surgery, they’ve fixed him up. He was getting half as much air as he needed,” he said.

“I was disappointed we couldn’t run in the Oakleigh Plate. I know how good he is first-up. We’ve set him for this.” Read the rest of this entry »

Black Caviar racks up win No.24

World champion sprinter Black Caviar has cruised to her 24th victory to claim the Group One William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley.

The unbeaten mare now has 14 Group One wins, equal with Kingston Town as the most in Australian history.

A capacity crowd cheered her home in the William Reid (1200m) as she stretched out in the straight and extended her lead over stablemate Karuta Queen to win by more than four lengths.

Karuta Queen had led early but once Black Caviar moved up on the turn, the field strung out and she went to the line to win easily.

Trainer Peter Moody said Black Caviar was in better shape now than she was a year ago before she went to Royal Ascot for a narrow win in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

“It’s scary how well she’s going,” Moody said.

“The way she let down and quickened – not many can sit down and sprint when she says go. I’m a bit lost for words.”

Jockey Luke Nolen said the mare felt as good as she had ever done.

“She didn’t disappoint anyone here today,” he said.

“She felt amazing to me. She floated into the race on her own accord.

“It’s a privilege to be part of such a wonderful racing story, an Australian sporting story.”

Bel Esprit Mare Snatches First Stakes Win

Mark Smith – Friday, 15 March 2013

Punters were feeling for the smelling salts as favourite Loveyamadly was still searching for a run half-way down the Moonee Valley straight in Friday’s Adapt Australia Abell Stakes (1200m).

Regular rider Dale Smith pushed the Bel Esprit mare between runners but she then needed to hold off the swoopers as five horses crossed the line with a half-length between them.

The judge found a short-half-head advantage for Loveyamadly over the fast finishing Go The Knuckle with It Is Written a nose back in third.

“I needed just a little bit of luck but I knew they had gone fairly hard in the race,” Smith said.

“I elected to take a sit, just because the speed was a bit too strong for me. They just went too fast, I got the late split, and it’s just matter of seeing the 1200 out.

“We gave her the softest run possible and she got the luck and got to the line solid.

“When I initially went for it, she got her head up a little and she hesitated but when I dropped a couple around her backside and went back to hands and heels, she really responded well.”

In earning her first stakes victory the ultra-consistent, Mick Price-trained mare, takes her overall record to 6 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third from 9 starts for earnings of $293,388. Read the rest of this entry »
