Black Caviar breaks record

BLACK Caviar made a stunning return to the racetrack in the race named after her, breaking the long-standing Flemington 1000m track record to take her unbeaten streak to 23.

The extraordinary mare thrilled the big crowd who turned out to see her win the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes in a race that saw trainer Peter Moody train a Group 1 trifecta.

In her first run since the nail-biting win in the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot last year, Black Caviar pushed her career prizemoney through the $7 million barrier to win from Moment Of Change and Golden Archer.

Black Caviar ran the 1000m in 55.42sec, which knocked off the track record held by Special (55.5), that has stood for 25 years.

“I’m just so proud to have her back,” Moody said.

“I said to my girls, I think it is the first time I have been nervous for a long time.

“I am a little bit emotion for the first time.

“She is just a good news story and I am very grateful for the owners who are prepared to share with everyone.

“Imagine having something this good and sharing it with every bugger in Australia. They are true blood Aussies, aren’t they.”

Nolen joked afterwards: “I didn’t drop my hands on her today. The build-up is mentally draining, but it’s not bad when you’re riding the fastest horse in the world.”

The win allows her to swell her Group 1 record at Flemington to six wins. The mare also has won a Newmarket Handicap and two Patinack Classics.

The triumph takes her record to 13 Group 1s, level with Sunline and Tie The Knot, and only one behind record-holder, the legendary Kingston Town.

Today, as she is with every race she contests, Black Caviar was greeted by thousands waving salmon-pink flags.

The win came after the longest spell of her career, having not raced since Royal Ascot eight months ago.

It has been a long road back, but, as Moody quipped the other day: “Call it a horseman’s instincts, but I looked at her the other day and I saw a smile on her face and a glint in her eye that I hadn’t seen for a long while.”

History will show he was right. The old gal’s back and better than ever.

ARARAT – Top Warrnambool jockey, Nikita McLean led Darwin to victory in a last-to-first performance in the TM ‘Murray’ Slattery Willaura Cup on Sunday. Trained by Bendigo’s Mark Jackson, the six-year-old gelding settled last in the 2000-metre feature race at NMIT Ararat Park as the field broke evenly from the gate. The pace was keen early on, with Heluva Storm winning the battle for the lead. He continued to set a good tempo before backing off a little in the back straight.
