JUBILANT Patrick Payne said it was “the best week I’ve ever had” after Hot Lover’s exciting win at Flemington yesterday, a contrast in style to stablemate Awakening Dream’s Grand Annual Steeplechase heroics two days earlier.

Payne used Hot Lover’s short course win to remind owners he has more strings to his bow than an ability to train stayers and jumpers.

Hot Lover completes Payne’s best week ever

Top horseman Patrick Payne has hit some of the highest highs but declared Hot Lover’s win capped the best week of his career after the three-year-old claimed Saturday’s James Boags Plate (1400m) at Flemington.

Payne rode Northerly to win the Cox Plate in 2002 during his illustrious time in the saddle. The Victorian trainer celebrated another highlight when he prepared Awakening Dream to win Thursday’s $250,000 Grand Annual Steeplechase (5500m) at Flemington.

Lover laps up wet track

Hot Lover rounded out a dream week for Patrick Payne with a Flemington win

He trained the winner of Australia’s longest race during the week, but Patrick Payne today showed he is just as adept at the preparation of promising three-year-olds.

Two days after recording his biggest win as a trainer, when Awakening Dream won the 5500-metre Grand Annual Steeplechase, the Plumpton horseman prepared Hot Lover to win the $70,000 James Boags Plate (1400m) at Flemington.

It was something of a bonus win after Payne had all but made up his mind to scratch the son of Bel Esprit – who was also an acceptor for Adelaide – on the way to the track.
