Retirement plans for brilliant Victorian sprinter Bel Esprit were put firmly on the backburner after the colt’s stunning win in the Group One Doomben 10,000 (1350m) at Doomben.

Bel Esprit, who had not won in nine starts since taking out the Group Three McNeil Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on August 31, led most of the way to down the well-backed Private Steer by 1-1/4 lengths with Spinning Hill another length away third.

Bel Esprit’s trainer John Symons only made a decision to run the three-year-old at 7am today after a sudden track improvement following more than 65mm of rain during the week. Read the rest of this entry »

Outstanding three-year-old Bel Esprit will end his racing career in the $1 million AAMI Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm on Saturday week.

Bel Esprit’s syndicate of owners came to an agreement with Victoria’s Eliza Park Stud on Wednesday to retire the rising four-year-old after the Stradbroke.

The son of Royal Academy will begin stud duty at Eliza Park in the spring with his service fee to be announced after the Stradbroke.

Eliza Park secured the standing rights to Bel Esprit before he contested last year’s Golden Slipper Stakes where he suffered his first and only defeat as a two-year-old when he finished fifth as favourite.

Eliza Park has since had an input into his racing program under trainer John Symons but the decision to retire the colt still rested with his owners that include Essendon AFL coach Kevin Sheedy.

Hall of Famer 15/06/03   Leave a comment

Bel Esprit – Bel Esprit went into the 2002 Golden Slipper as the unbeaten hot favourite.  A winner of the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes, he was yet another fairytale find, selling for only $9,000 as a yearling, and providing Melbourne’s battling punters something to cheer about.

Bel Esprit was ridden throughout 6 of his starts by veteran jockey Wayne “Smokey/Apple Bobber” Treloar, but after the slipper things took a turn for the worst for old Smokey. He found himself getting a little too steamy at Caulfield and as a result was banned from riding the great colt any further. This minor mishap meant nothing to connections as many had thought the Apple Bobber had lost his marbles long before. It was fitting that in its first Spring campaign it took its place in one of the hottest Cox Plate fields of all time. A mere 23.3 lengths behind the winner was all that separated Bel and Equine Immortality.

A string of frustrating seconds pursued for the Bel but he finally got one back on his rivals. ‘The Bel’ brought a tear to the eye the day it romped home in the Doomben 10,000 to cap off a stunning career. Although he ran once more connections were merely giving him an exhibition gallop to give his many fans one last chance to experience the champ.

Chubba and in particular Macca would have stood on all fours for this horse and it gave hope to students like Dave Cameron, David Blunt and Liam Smith that Group 1 Glory could be funded by making rank amateur porno movies! As Kevin Sheedy once quoted in reference to Bel Esprit in comparison with his other love in Essendon, “A team of donkeys will never beat a Champion STEED!”. Couldn’t agree more Kev!

Double Stradbroke blow for Bel Esprit   Leave a comment

Double Stradbroke blow for Bel Esprit

Wednesday, 4 June 2003:

Victorian colt Bel Esprit was dealt a double blow with an overnight downpour and a horror barrier draw to mark his racing farewell in the $1 million Stradbroke Hcp (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The day started badly for dejected trainer John Symons who woke this morning to learn Eagle Farm was rated heavy after 63 millimetres of rain was dumped in an overnight storm. Read the rest of this entry »

Bel Esprit Decision This Week

  Story By Chris Scholtz

Monday, 26 May 2003: Future plans for outstanding three-year-old Bel Esprit will be resolved this week.

While Bel Esprit is a definite starter in the $1 million AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 7, it is still undecided if the son of leading sire Royal Academy will race on next season.

Victoria’s Eliza Park Stud holds the breeding rights to Bel Esprit and will meet with the colt’s owners on Wednesday to discuss his future.
