Bel Esprit Standing Rights 22/5/02   Leave a comment

Bel Esprit Standing Rights

Wednesday, 22 May 2002: Victoria’s Eliza Park Stud has secured the standing rights to brilliant colt Bel Esprit when he is retired from racing.

The winner of the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield was unbeaten in his first five starts in black type races before finishing fifth in the G1 Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill in March.

Eliza Park has purchased a share holding in Bel Esprit to ensure that the Romsey property stands the son of Royal Academy when he is retired.

In winning the Blue Diamond Stakes Bel Esprit became the second winner of the contest found in the colt’s immediate pedigree.

Mahassin, a half-sister to Bel Esprit’s dam Bespoken, won the event in 1990.

Royal Academy, the high-profile sire of Bel Esprit, returns to Australia this coming season by virtue of the sustained stakes performances of his local progeny led by Bel Esprit.

Bel Esprit is set to race through his three-year-old season before a decision is made on whether he begins stud duty in 2003.

A little bit of Seamer’s wizardry gets Calaway Gal and Ethereal a long, long way

By Craig Young
March 25 2002

Harry Potter swept through Golden Slipper day disguised as a jockey. Scott Seamer is a wizard. At Rosehill on Saturday he left the 25,100 people there spellbound. His rivals were mesmerised.

“They give apprentices allowances – he should be made to carry more weight,” said jockey Darren Beadman, who not long ago was the No1 sorcerer.

Never mind the $1.5 million the owners of Bel Esprit could collect today if the colt becomes only the second favourite to win the Golden Slipper Stakes in the past 15 years.

The real windfall could come a short time later when the major Australasian studs begin bidding for his services. Read the rest of this entry »

Bel Esprit ready to win, says trainer

Tony Bourke
February 22 2002

Trainer John Symons reported yesterday that hot favorite Bel Esprit was “spoiling for a fight” in tomorrow’s Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield.

In his biggest test in 15 years as a trainer, Symons believes he could not have a horse better prepared for any race, let alone a $1 million group one event.

Pardon my French 22/02/02   Leave a comment

Pardon my French, but old-timers have the edge

By Max Presnell
March 22 2002

Nobly named from the French for a “learned gentleman, vivacious wit, a man of quick and lively repartee”, Bel Esprit gives Saturday’s $2.5 million Golden Slipper at Rosehill Gardens a liberal dash of old-time class. Read the rest of this entry »

Slipper may prove long wait for a bull at a gate

For team Bel Esprit and the colt’s legion of financial supporters, let’s hope the one barrier is a blessing. What worries me is that the two-year-old will be the first horse into the gates for Saturday’s $2.5 million Golden Slipper.

How much time will officials allow should Bel Esprit continue to prove cantankerous behind the starting stalls? The same goes for Choisir, which has drawn barrier nine. Read the rest of this entry »
