Sweet filly has Stanley dreaming big

Trainer Brent Stanley is already dreaming big with unraced two-year-old Sweet Sherry.

Purchased for $260,000 at the 2015 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, the daughter of Bel Esprit makes her racing debut in Sunday’s Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) at Flemington.

Third in a recent barrier trial at Cranbourne, Stanley said a subsequent jumpout at Kyneton indicated the filly had above-average ability and deserved to be entered in races such as the Blue Diamond Stakes and Golden Slipper.

“She trialled nicely at Cranbourne, she drew the outside barrier and she covered plenty of ground but she was solely there for the experience,” Stanley said.

“She had another jumpout at Kyneton on Monday and won quite impressively with a set of winkers on and we’ve left them on for her race.

“When we purchased her we thought she was the standout of the fillies at the Melbourne Premier Sale.

“If she makes it to those big races then great, it’s all pie in the sky stuff at the moment, but on what she’s shown us at home it’s enough to warrant paying the first acceptance fee for the Golden Slipper which closes next week.”

Set to be partnered by Damien Oliver from barrier five of the 10-horse field, Sweet Sherry is rated the $6.50 second favourite with CrownBet behind Tony McEvoy’s Manuel at $2.05.

Though he believed she would derive significant benefit from her debut, Stanley said Sweet Sherry had ticked all the boxes to warrant going to the races on Sunday.

“She’s a nice mature two-year-old, she’s a big, strong horse for a filly and she looks more like a three-year-old colt.

“I’d like to see her run a forward race on Sunday and I think the experience that she’ll take out of the race will hold her in good stead for future races as a two-year-old and I think she’s a big chance of making it to the next level.”
