Keen Array eyes Blue Sapphire

David Hayes and Tom Dabernig’s good form continued in Race 1 at Moonee Valley on Friday night, with Keen Array easing to victory to storm into contention for the Blue Sapphire Stakes.

Jockey Damian Lane positioned Keen Array just off the leading pair of Danuki and Mawahibb, and the son of Bel Espirit swung three wide in the straight and accounted for fellow fancy Mawahibb by 2.5 lengths while Ability finished hard for third.

Hayes said Lane learned from Keen Array’s last-start second behind Bassett at Caulfield over 1100m.

“It was a bit of a cut-throat race last time, and we took the seat this time. He looked quite classy. I was thrilled with the win. He might get a bit further the way he won,” Hayes said post-race.

“Damian was a bit critical of himself getting into that speed battle the other day. I thought he was a bit of a victim.

“He certainly rectified it.

“And with that VOBIS bonus, it was a really valuable race for him.”

Even more valuable would be a win in the Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on October 14, the race worth $350,000.
