Cricket legend Shane Warne was famously sent home from the 2003 World Cup and banned for a year for taking a diuretic given to him by his mother to improve his appearance.

BRISBANE jockey Ric McMahon was banned for six months after confessing he took the deadly drug methamphetamine in a desperate attempt to shed the kilos.

McMahon has faced a well-known weight battle and has previously been suspended for taking a banned diuretic to make the minimum weight for jockeys.

McMahon, the son of former Brisbane Norths rugby league winger Shane “Cocky” McMahon, had discovered that methamphetamine was appealing as a stimulant and appetite suppressant.

The case throws a spotlight on meth use within the racing industry, with officials in New Zealand already conceding there is a ‘’culture of meth’’ use within Kiwi racing.

Jockeys are known to torture their bodies by fasting and sitting in hot saunas along with other extreme measures to lose weight for rides.

But often not even that is enough.

McMahon’s weight problems meant he often missed important rides during the Queensland Winter Carnival and he admitted he had turned to meth to lose weight quickly.

‘’He told stewards that he has been battling a lot with weight and turned to the drug (meth) for that reason,’’ Racing Queensland steward Daniel Aurisch said.

‘’He also had been experiencing pain from a rod inserted in his leg from a fall many years ago. For that reason he said he had been unable to do his normal fitness regime.’’

McMahon, who has also faced personal and financial struggles in the last few months, pleaded guilty to taking methamphetamine and accepted his ban.

‘I made an error of judgment and I look forward to returning to riding when the penalty concludes .. and regaining the trust of participants again in the Queensland racing community,’’ McMahon said.

‘’I accept the penalty and received a fair hearing from RQ stewards.’’

McMahon becomes the second Queensland jockey this year to be banned for serious drug use after apprentice jockey Matthew McGillivray was suspended for four months after he tested positive to methamphetamines and MDMA.

It is understood McMahon intends to seek work outside the racing industry while he serves his ban. His hearing was held in-camera (private) by racing stewards due to the personal and sensitive nature of some of the submissions.
