TONY Gollan toasted his record-equalling training feat with champagne on a luxury catamaran cruise around the beautiful Greek island of Santorini.

The leading Brisbane trainer drew level with the late Bruce McLachlan’s record of 78 metropolitan winners in a season when two-year-old colt Most Important won by a nose in a 1200m Handicap at the Sunshine Coast.

Most Important is owned by Linda Huddy who raced Australian Derby winner Shoot Out and has Victoria Derby winner Preferment.

Gollan and wife Jane are on a European holiday and could not watch the record-equalling moment, although they were able to watch one of their later Sunshine Coast runners via FaceTime.

The Gollans will return to Brisbane early on Wednesday morning but were celebrating the achievement on a six-hour cruise around the stunning Greek island of Santorini.

Gollan has several leading chances in Sunday’s metropolitan meeting at Doomben and is hoping to be able to claim the record outright.

‘’Bruce McLachlan is an icon in our sport so I am just so humbled to share his record,’’ Gollan told The Sunday Mail from Santorini.

‘’At this time of the racing season there is a lot of focus on premierships and records, and it has been a bit tricky recently to get winners to be able to get closer to this record.

‘’We have had plenty of ups and downs in our stable this season and it really has been a team effort to be able to produce so many winners.

‘’Jane and I will have a few champagnes on the catamaran and then we will be back to work in Brisbane on Wednesday.’’

In a photo-finish which seemed to take an eternity, Most Important eventually got the nod from Monaco Playboy by the narrowest of margins.

Gollan hadn’t been keen to talk about the record previously, not wanting to jinx himself, but it is a remarkable achievement to equal the training mark set by McLachlan in 1987-88.

Many of Gollan’s Winter Carnival runners did not measure up but the trainer has been a prolific visitor to the winners stall all season.

Jockey Tim Bell, who won the Brisbane jockeys premiership last season, said he was delighted to help Gollan equal the training record when he rode Most Important to victory.

‘’Tony has set that goal for a while and I was very happy to ride that winner for him,’’ Bell said.

‘’A lot of people say that Tony was probably not worried about the record, but just like me with the premiership last year I am sure it means a lot to him.

‘’Tony has come a long way in a short period of time and for him to be able to do that is a credit to him and his staff.’’
