BLAKE Shinn has accepted an offer to compete against the best jockeys in the world in next month’s Shergar Cup in the UK.

Shinn joins Kerrin McEvoy as the Australian representatives who will tackle the prestigious international jockeys’ challenge at Ascot on August 8.

Four teams will compete for first place — Rest Of The World, Great Britain, Europe and The Girls.

Jamie Spencer is the spearhead of the British team, and Emma-Jayne Wilson will lead The Girls into battle.

Sizing up a few worthy options

A FEW weeks ago this column spoke about the size of race fields.

The suggestion was that we should look at ensuring there’s a greater spread of weights within the standard race in Sydney each week.

Most races have a 60kg topweight and a 54kg bottomweight — a 6kg spread or 12 ratings points.

If we dropped the limit weight back to 53kg and increased the topweight to 61kg, the spread would increase by 33 per cent to 16 points and therefore ensure there’s a greater pool of horses who can compete in any given race carrying their true weight.

Expect one of these changes to be announced soon.

Speaking of something special

WHO watched Speak Fondly win her trial at Randwick on Monday? I did. And I can’t wait to see her race.

Cobalt just won’t go away

TODAY we hear the verdict from judge Paul Amarti on whether the 15-year disqualification of Darren Smith will stick.

Amarti was employed by Racing NSW to give his independent opinion on the cobalt charges laid on Smith.

Still on or around cobalt and prohibited substances: Why did Racing Victoria only swab the first two placegetters — Admire Rakti and Rising Romance — of last year’s Caulfield Cup?

Behind these two were Lidari and Junoob, who have both subsequently been disqualified from the Group 1 race they used as a lead-up to the Caulfield feature. Around five horses are swabbed in a standard race at Canterbury on a Wednesday afternoon.

Great servant to racing industry

TOMMY Hill Jr’s funeral will be held on Friday at 10:30am at St Michael’s Catholic Church, Banks Avenue, Daceyville.

Hill Jr had become one of the longest-serving industry participants working out of Randwick through various avenues, including trackwork riding, training and ATC pool superintendent.

He had a heart attack 10 days ago after a bad reaction to penicillin.

Four worth keeping eye on

HORSES to keep an eye out for this week — Cwmbran, Joueur, Helford Riverand Global Domination — all have put in at least one strong gallop over the past week or so and will be hard to beat in their respective races this week.
