THE shooting death of a racing horse at Balnarring southeast of Melbourne is being investigated by police.

Detectives have been told the thoroughbred named Arrier was discovered slain in a rural property paddock close to Myers Road last Saturday at about 8.30am.

The horse was found with a bullet wound to the head which is believed to have been fired at close range.

Arrier was last seen by her owners when she was fed about 8pm on Friday.

She was found near the unfinished feed, which leads detectives to believe she may have been killed not long after she was fed.

The eight year old thoroughbred was valued at more than $100,000, say police.

Hastings Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for information following the shooting.
