HORSE RACING: Russell Adair always wanted Holdontoyahorses to finish on a high.

So after she won the 1800m at Ooralea Racecourse on Saturday, Adair said his favourite racehorse deserved to retire.

“She drew a bad barrier and was coming last by quite a fair bit,” he said.

“But she still managed to come through and win.

“We are so proud of her.

“And after that run we decided to finish her on a high and retire her.”

The seven-year-old has won more than $80,000 in six weeks.

As well as being a champion athlete, her trainer said the horse had a great personality.

“She’s a real people horse,” Adair said.

“It’s important we do the right thing by her too, after she’s been so good to us.”

The big mare would have had to travel up to Cairns and Townsville to compete in similar length races this year.

“She’s quite a big mare, so we decided that wouldn’t be fair,” Mr Adair said.

“Breeding season starts in about a month, so hopefully she’s going to start a new life as a mum.”

She was set to breed with Black Caviar’s sire, Bel Esprit, so her offspring couldn’t have a better chance at becoming champion racehorses.

“Hopefully Holdontoyacaviar will be racing soon,” Adair said.

“But I’ll have a big box of tissues when she goes off to the stud in about a month’s time.”
