The one-more-run philosophy often brings horses unstuck, but in a pointer to the future, Alegria got the job done at Rosehill on Saturday.

She drove through to get the better of Elle Lou and will be able to go to the spelling paddock a winner.

“We had her booked on the truck on Monday, but this race looked like a nice race for her and when she drew [barrier] two it got better,” Godolphin’s trainer John O’Shea said

“We haven’t done much with her since her last run, but on the fresh side she was very good and it is a sign of her quality.

“She is a really nice filly that still has some growing to do and she can come back after the spring and I think she will go through her grades.”

The win gave the lead in the jockeys’ premiership back to James McDonald, who returned from a stint in England this week to attempt to win consecutive titles.

“It is nice to get a winner and she is going to get better,” McDonald said. “She just feels like a nice horse.”

McDonald had the run of the race on Alegria   and drove through on the inside to take the lead at 200-metre mark, getting almost a length clear, and then held off a second challenge from Elle Lou, which only went down by a half neck. Duccio ran third, two lengths away.

Alegria started her winter campaign with an impressive win at Warwick Farm but it took until her fifth run to return to the winner’s stall.

“She won well first-up and we wanted to get her a bit of experience. I have kept her going and in the past two runs I have put the blinkers on,” O’Shea said.

“She should have won last time and you saw there that she is more focused.

“She can get some sun on her back and come back in the summer.”
