Peter Snowden is sweet with the barrier, the wet conditions and the first-up run from Commanding Wit, but believes she might just be a dash off her top heading to Rosehill on Saturday.

The Commands mare has put three of five wins on board since Team Snowden took her over when they started their public training venture in May last year and has always taken a couple of runs to find her best.

“I think she is ready to run a good race on the weekend but I would say she is a shandy off her best,” Snowden said.

“She is a mare that likes to work into her campaigns and can put in a long campaign, so she is going to get better as she continues her preparation, but this race certainly suit her now.

“The small field also helps her because she can be closer and she will be hitting the line.”

Commanding Wit returned a fortnight ago with what has become her customary first-up effort. She loomed in the straight until her condition gave out but she was still only two lengths from Hard To Hold.

Drawing barrier two will mean Commanding Wit can hold position if premiership-chasing jockey Hugh Bowman wants and the majority of her wins have come when she settles in the first half of the field.

She has been a great money spinner for connections and is probably a length or two from being a black-type performer, which she may find this preparation.

“I was very happy with that first-up run and I think this could be her preparation,” Snowden said. “She will certainly handle the wet conditions, which is a bonus. Looking at the field on Saturday, we would be confident she would measure against that sort of opposition.”

Snowden only has the one runner at Rosehill but it has been a wonderful first full season as a public operation with five group 1 wins and 79 in total. Peter and son Paul sit on 96 winners since going into partnership and the stable continues to grow.

He is looking to expand his operation when boxes become available in Sydney but at the moment is concentrating on preparing his spring team and two-year-olds for next season.

“We have a lot of babies in at the moment getting educated,” Snowden said. “It’s a bit quiet on the racing front but there is plenty going on.”
