Guineas aim for Gredington

Trainer Pat Hyland has Caulfield Guineas ambitions for rising three-year-old Gredington.

Gredington came from the back of the field in heavy conditions to win the 2YO Handicap over 1300m at Warrnambool on Sunday under top weight of 59kg.

Hyland revealed lofty ambitions for the colt by Magnus out of unraced Bel Esprit mare Beswick.

“It was a great effort,” Hyland told Racing Live.

“I gave up after the first 50 yards when she (apprentice Jackie Beriman) got back that far.

“But I think he could be a Guineas horse and he was here at Warrnambool on a wet day.

“He’s a very promising horse. I think we’re going to have a lot of fun with him.”

Gredington showed promise in his first campaign when he contested the Blue Diamond Prelude and finished fourth in the Group Two VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

The Guineas is in October and Hyland believes the colt deserves to be aimed that way.

Gredington ($3.50) finished strongly down the outside to grab Just A Moment ($2.20) on the line to win by a short head with Broadway Danza third.

Beriman admitted the plan wasn’t to be back last in the run but she was going to be trapped wide.

The apprentice was full of praise for the way Gredington rallied over the concluding stages to win.

“He’s a really nice horse with a bright future,” Beriman said.

Gredington’s win was his second from six starts.
