Monday Mail: All the big racing issues from the weekend and the week ahead

Racing Queensland. So far prizemoney has been left alone, but behind closed doors, pressure to make cuts to many areas is leading to some heated discussions.

WHO to back and who to sack as Nathan Exelby previews the week ahead.

The Talking Point:

Ride of the Day:

Glen Colless, Another Whiskey, Sunshine Coast, Race 7: The wide-gate wizard did it again here, being able to find the right spot from gate 11 and get the job done.

Three to Back:

Denarius, Sunshine Coast, Race 7: He will be giving the older horses a cold in a few weeks when he steps out to all aged racing. Superb fresh effort after nothing went right.

Vanbrugh, Rosehill, Race 1: Had trialled well and just found a fitter, in form rival a shade strong. Stable’s runners always improve into a prep and shapes as a promising three-year-old for next season.

Marenostro, Rosehill, Race 8: Blocked for a run at a vital stage and lost all hope from that point. Wound up OK late. His turn in Saturday grade will come soon.

Three to Sack:

Time To Exceed, Sunshine Coast, Race 8: Had plenty of admirers off the back of five consecutive wins last time in but failed to measure up to the better grade on this occasion.

Cruz By, Sunshine Coast, Race 1: Somehow managed to get punters in again. Has talent, but is a well established tease now.

Supreme Jet, Sunshine Coast, Race 2: Attracted confident betting support to start a clear favourite but found the class rise beyond him. Sure to win plenty of races back home, but needs to lift in the city.

This Week:

Tomorrow: Cessnock, Corowa, Geelong, Devonport

Wednesday: Sunshine Coast, Canterbury, Grafton, Bendigo, Balaklava, Belmont

Thursday: Rockhampton, Grafton, Sale, Northam

Friday: Ipswich, Gunnedah, Wagga, Geelong, Carnarvon

Saturday: Doomben, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Randwick, Newcastle, Queanbeyan, Flemington, Morphettville, Belmont, Broome, Darwin

Sunday: Sunshine Coast, Cairns, Grafton, Mudgee, Warracknabeal, Warrnambool, Penola, Kalgoorlie, Hobart

The Quote:

“I ride him work, which means he carries a lot of weight, so when he gets into a race it probably feels like he’s running around in the paddock.” Trainer David Murphy on impressive two-year-old Shotacross The Bow.
