Victorian trainer prepares for yet another assault on Top End Carnival

Kyneton-based trainer Neil Dyer (left) celebrates Darwin Cup carnival success with jockey

Kyneton-based trainer Neil Dyer (left) celebrates Darwin Cup carnival success with jockey Jarrod Todd.

CHARISMATIC trainer Neil Dyer is planning a three-pronged attack on this year’s Darwin Cup, with a surprise package to lift his hopes of another success.

Dyer, who arrived in the Top End earlier this week for his eighth successive tilt at the Darwin Cup Carnival, will train in-form veteran Bolton, as well as Proverb Royal and Request to win this year’s $200,000 feature race on August 3.

The Victorian trainer has won the Cup twice with the now retired Hawks Bay and, speaking exclusively to the NT News, he said he wanted to make it a hat-trick of wins in 2015.

Those back-to-back victories with Hawks Bay included the memorable 2012 event which featured one of the closest wins in the 60-year history of the race.

After winning his first Cup the year before by four lengths, Hawks Bay carried 64.5kg to runner-up Bolton with 57kg in 2012.

“Hawks Bay led into the straight, was headed by Bolton, and showed enormous determination and courage to fight back and win in a photo by a nose,” Dyer recalled.

Now the shoe is on the other foot with Dyer aiming to win the 2000m spectacle for the third time in five years with the horse that almost denied Hawks Bay his second successive crown.

Ironically, Bolton has just completed back-to-back wins in the Mount Isa Cup for trainer Steven Royes who has asked Dyer to look after the eight-year-old gelding and son of Zabeel.

Bolton, who has eight wins from 49 starts and almost $300,000 in prize money, arrives on June 26 after having one more run at the McKinlay Cup on Saturday week.

“I would love to win three Darwin Cups before I am finished,” Dyer said.

“I have two wins and have run second three times.

“I will be tickled pink to see Bolton run in the Cup again, this time for me.”

Dyer said Bolton’s runs in the Alice Springs Cup when he finished third behind winner Spartan Eagle and Pretty Blonde and in the Tennant Creek Cup when he was second behind Effcee showed he was still competitive.

“Bolton has never won a race in the Northern Territory,” he said.

“He likes the track (Fannie Bay) and he can run the trip.”

Royal Request won last year’s NT Derby and ran second in the Guineas and Dyer is hoping the four-year-old gelding can go on with it this year.

“He needs to take the next step but I always thought he will,” he said.

“I know the Derby has not always been a good indicator for the Darwin Cup but I just thought the way he raced last year he might develop into a Darwin Cup horse.”

Proverb is a classy horse, according to Dyer, who has a history of running in Group and Listed races down south.

“He won a Group 3 over a mile in Queensland,” he said.

And don’t think the shrewd Dyer has his sights set on the first Monday in August.

“I am thinking of running Port Black and Silver Eagle in the Guineas,” he said.
