Tony Gollan may miss moment of triumph as he closes on Bruce McLachlan’s longstanding trainer’s record

It comes at a time when Gollan’s haul of winners this season has reached 74 which puts him within sight of the record of 78 put together by the late Bruce McLachlan in 1987-88.

TONY Gollan is only four wins off breaking Bruce McLachlan’s longstanding Brisbane trainer’s record but might not get to see the golden moment.

Gollan and wife Jane will depart for a three-week overseas holiday on Sunday but will leave the stable in capable hands, with Tony’s father Darryl helping to oversee operations.

Gollan isn’t keen to talk about the record, not wanting to jinx himself, but it would be a remarkable achievement in a season where many of his Winter Carnival horses haven’t quite measured up.

“It has been a bit of a trying season at times, so it has been good to get this many winners,” Gollan said.

Many of Queensland’s trainers have chosen the period at the end of the Winter Carnival or post Carnival to get some much-needed rest and relaxation.

Rob Heathcote has also been on an overseas trip and top Sunshine Coast trainer Stuart Kendrick is overseas.

The Listed Queensland Cup (3200m) headlines Saturday’s metropolitan meeting at the Sunshine Coast and it will be interesting to see how the track shapes up.

With Eagle Farm out of action for 12 months, other tracks including the Sunshine Coast have had to shoulder a much bigger workload.
