Darren Weir strengthens his hand in trainers’ premiership race

Peter Moody pegged the lead back to six when Handsome Tycoon won. Jockey Dwayne Dunn’s win on Strong Hand took his tally to 49, a lead of two over Craig Williams and Damien Oliver.

DARREN Weir’s chances of taking out his second successive Melbourne trainers’ premiership strengthened on Wednesday with a double at Sale.

Strong Hand and Artistic Lass won, taking his tally to 71.

DEE-LIGHTED WITH DOUBLE

TRAINER Mick Price and his apprentice Michael Dee combined for a winning double at Sale on the meeting’s most impressive winners, the in-form Duke Of Brunswick and runaway first-up winner Plan.

GRIFFITHS GETS BABY BONUS

ROBBIE Griffiths continued his good run with two-year-olds on Wednesday when Don’t Doubt Marley made it two wins from two starts at Sale.

Last Sunday, Griffiths produced first-starter Northkape to win the Vobis Gold at Cranbourne.

Another youngster Deja Blue finished an unlucky second at Geelong on Tuesday.

Griffiths unveils another two-year-old today at Pakenham Synthetic with filly Single Note making her debut.

TRAINER HAS A LOT ON PLATE

NIGEL Blackiston is aiming for his fourth win in the Provincial Plate in the last 13 years with Heez Notorious at Flemington on Saturday.

Blackiston has set Heez Notorious for the race but was disappointed with barrier 16.

VRC HONOURS SPRINT LEGEND

HE VRC has renamed one of its races after Takeover Target, who died last week.

The heat of the All Victorian Sprint Series is now the Takeover Target Tribute Handicap.
