Trainer Kelso Wood hopes to end winter carnival with a bang

Real Surreal has halved her opening quote for the Tiara, while Into The Red and Dansolei are in from double figures and She’s Miss Devine is battling for favouritism in the day’s opener.

KELSO Wood will take a strong hand into the final day of the winter carnival, with all four of his runners finding support from punters this week.

The quartet have led a recent revival for the trainer, who went from being the most lethal strike-rate trainer in the state a couple of seasons ago to a horror patch where winners were few and far between.

There has been a change in momentum recently.

With Real Surreal’s win last week, Wood joined Rob Heathcote (3) and Stuart Kendrick (2) as the only local trainers with more than one stakes winner over the carnival.

“I’m very happy with the way the past couple of months have gone,” Wood said. “It would be nice to finish off with a couple more. It’s fair to say these horses running (Saturday) are the best in my stable at the moment and they’re all going particularly well.”

Wood said he was pleased to see blue skies over the past two days and hoped the track continued to dry. Into The Red fared best of his runners at the barriers.

“Into The Red should get a good run this time and the speed on suits him,’’ Wood said. “He’s going great at the moment and he’s furnished into a nice horse now.’’

The trainer feels She’s Miss Devine, Dansolei and Real Surreal would need luck from their double-digit draws but were well enough to figure.

“I’m keen to see how Dansolei shapes up over 1800m,’’ he said. “As we’ve gone along, I have started to think she’s going to run a trip.

“The way she’s gone in her last two runs suggests she’s ready for it now.”
