Stewards check jockey Ben Melham’s phone records after fluctuations around Baron Archer

RVL chief steward Terry Bailey said they were asking about Melham’s phone contacts before and after Baron Archer raced at Echuca on March 8, ridden by Melham.

RACING Victoria stewards have questioned jockey Ben Melham over his phone records as they continue their inquiry into betting fluctuations around Baron Archer.

Stewards questioned Melham and racehorse owner Nick Ectoros behind closed doors at Flemington races on Saturday.

“We have his phone records and we questioned Melham on his activity on the phone prior to and after the race meetings,” Bailey said.

“In particular his calls to Nick Ectoros, who is a known associate of Dan Nikolic.”

Ectoros owned Smoking Aces, who was the subject of a stewards’ inquiry after a 2012 Cranbourne race, when ridden by Nikolic. No charges resulted.

“This is a continuation of our lines of investigation around Baron Archer, which we hope to wrap up soon,” Bailey said.

Stewards last week charged Tania Hyett, the partner of suspended jockey Nikolic, for laying horses when employed by the Robert Smerdon stable.
Stewards looked into Hyett’s betting activities for the Baron Archer inquiry after the horse was laid to lose $260,000 on Betfair.

Stewards alleged Hyett placed or had placed on her behalf 34 lay bets on Smerdon-trained horses between December 20 and April 17.

Her charges will be heard before the Racing And Appeals Disciplinary Board

Stewards have also questioned Nikolic about the betting activity on the Echuca race.

Melham’s ride on Baron Archer, who finished third in a field of five, is not being queried by stewards.

Baron Archer’s former trainer Jason Warren was fined $17,500 for not alerting stewards that the gelding had had a throat operation in the lead-up to the race.
