The winter months are a time  for apprentices to shine in the metropolitan area. They are also a time for outsiders to earn their keep as the tracks soften.

They did so in spades at Moonee Valley when the quaddie on the last four races paid a massive $300,686 for a dollar. Hardly surprising when the respective TAB dividends on the winning quartet were $33.60, $6.40, $43.40 and $41.50.

Junior jockeys rode more than half the card, with a highlight from  leading apprentice Patrick Moloney who rode a double – on outsider Prince Rahy  in the 1200-metre Cafetto Handicap and consistent middle-distance performer Digitalism ($7.50) in the 2040-metre Dominant Handicap.

The big battalions, it must be said, stole most of the training thunder.
