The phone always rings – generally most days – when Richard Laming might not be pulling the right rein. And the man usually offering the advice at the other end could be forgiven for keeping his own house in order this week.

Not only is Bevan Laming’s son, Richard, going to have his first group 1 runner in his own right in the $600,000 JJ Atkins at Doomben on Saturday, his father will also be joining him in the mounting yard with a hopeful of his own.

The pair were the first-ever training partnership to be established in Victoria, starting their association in the 2007-08 season. Richard trains out of Cranbourne now after father Bevan migrated to the warmer climes of Queensland to set up his own base.
