Fourth Group 1 for Boban

Mark Smith – Saturday, 23 May 2015

Boban claimed the scalp of It’s A Dundeel in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes in March last year but it took another ten starts before the son of Bernardini (USA) found the winners stall again in Saturday’s $750,000 Group I Doomben 10,000 (1350m) at Doomben.

In a three-horse war over the final 200 metres, Boban held the challenge of the heavily backed Charlie Boy (Myboycharlie) by a short-neck with a nose back to Godolphin’s Generalife (Lonhro) in third.

It was the seventh stakes win and fourth at the highest level for Boban taking his overall record to 10 wins and 2 seconds from 31 starts for earnings of $2,148,663.

Glyn Schofield had been on the colt in his three previous Group 1 victories, which included the Epsom Handicap and Emirates Stakes in 2013, and he was in the saddle again on Saturday.

“To win first-up like he has today, tremendous performance,” Schofield told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

“He was full of courage.

“He had to take a really narrow run after we’d straightened and I felt like if I can get him through the run, which he’s sometimes reluctant to take, he’d take a lot of running down because he had a lot of running in him.

“He fought really, really strongly to the line.”

Trainer Chris Waller said it was great to see the gelding back in winning form.

“He’s a great horse and he’s been very good for us, so it’s good to have him back on the top level,” Waller said.

“You just hope for the best, we thought it was the best way to attack a Group 1 race (fresh) so you just work back from that.”

“He was a serious horse and it’s probably hard to say he’s back to his best but he’s winning Group Ones.”

“It’s a shame the weights aren’t already out (for the Stradbroke Handicap) because he’s going to get top-weight and that makes it hard.

“I don’t know. I’ll take to the owners.

“He’s only five. It’s not as if to say he has to run in two weeks time and then he has to be retired so I don’t know.

“I’d be leaning towards giving him a good proper spell and same again in the spring.

“Pick off the right race and continue having some fun.”

A $100,000 purchase from the Millbrook consignment at the 2011 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling sale, Boban is the tenth foal and only stakes-winner out of the 1886 Group 1AJC Australian Oaks heroine Kenbelle (Kenmare).

Boban was bred by Greendale Lodge owner Tony Thomas who purchased Kenbelle for $150,000 from the Swettenham Stud consignment at the 2005 Easter Broodmare Sale.

The Tale Of The Cat (USA) filly she was carrying at the time was sold as a yearling for $230,000.

The daughter of Kenmare has a two-year-old colt by Authorized (IRE), who was sold at the Inglis Premier Yearling sale for $85,000 and a yearling brother to Boban

Kenbelle missed to Bernardini (USA) (pictured)  in 2013 and again last year before being covered late in the season by Spirit Of Boom who won last year’s Doomben 10,000 at his penultimate start.
