LEADING racehorse owner and breeder David Moodie is the new chairman of Racing Victoria after previous incumbent Rob Roulston’s resignation over a horse nomination issue.

Roulston resigned at a Racing Victoria board meeting on Friday afternoon after admitting responsibility for an error in relation to the nomination of a horse.

Roulston, in his role as a bloodstock agent, last year nominated an overseas horse to run in the Melbourne Cup.

The purchase of the horse subsequently fell through and Roulston advised Racing Victoria that a nomination fee did not need to be paid as a result of this.

Roulston was then told the fee could not be waived and he paid it immediately.

His initial request to not pay the fee came to light during an internal audit process.

Racing Victoria said Roulston had taken responsibility for his “error of judgment” at the meeting before offering his resignation.

“In resigning today, Mr Roulston has taken personal accountability for the error, which he believes is in the best interests of racing and which will allow him time to pursue his business interests,” a statement read.

Roulston had been chairman for two years and on the Racing Victoria board since 2008.

“It has been a great privilege to serve on the board of Racing Victoria, the past two years as chairman,” Mr Roulston said.

“As chairman I understand the need to set the highest standards of governance and probity and as a result I believe my action is right and proper.

“I wish Racing Victoria all the best for the future and will now focus on my other business interests here and overseas.”
