Angels Beach returns after extended break

Friday 15 May 2015, 4:11pm

A longer than expected break may prove the right call when Angels Beach makes her return to racing at Caulfield.

The daughter of Bel Esprit resumes in Saturday’s ALH Group Plate (1000m) after trainer Peter Moody gave the mare some extra time off after a taxing spring preparation.

Angels Beach has previously been given spells of 14 weeks, 20 weeks, 19 weeks and 21 weeks and on return registered three wins and two second placings.

The five-year-old comes back having not raced for 27 weeks after finishing seventh to Atmospherical over 1000m at Flemington last spring.

Although she hasn’t trialled publicly, Moody says Angels Beach has trialled well in local Caulfield jump-outs.

“She’s trialled well, she seems in good shape and she’s got a good fresh record,” Moody said.

“She’s come up a little later than I would have liked as I had to give her a little bit longer off because her last prep took a little bit out of her.

“We’ve probably missed a lot of nice options so we’ll see how she goes before deciding where to go with her.

“She’s a short-course horse, around 1100 metres is about as far as she wants, so that limits her options.”

Although successful at 1200m, Angels Beach has recorded three of her six wins over Saturday’s distance and is also a first-up winner at the track.

Angels Beach has been the best supported runner in the race, firming from $3.20 to $2.70 and is a clear favourite over Consorting at $4.60.

Moody has two debutants in the 1100m race for two year-olds, Bassett and Kinglike.

Bassett is racing for a possible trip to Queensland having been nominated for the Group One J J Atkins Plate (1600m) at Doomben on June 6.

“That’s very speculative with him,” Moody said.

“He’s a bit of a different Savabeel in that he’s a short, nuggety little fella but he’s always shown us nice ability.”

Bassett is the most fancied of the Moody pair at $4.20 with Kinglike at $18 and another debutant Battle Of Troy the $2.90 favourite.
