Nick Olive aims high after Bring A Secret turns fortunes around

CANBERRA trainer Nick Olive described Bring A Secret’s previous start as “probably the most disappointed” he’s felt post-race, but the two-year-old made amends with a victory at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Bring A Secret debuted last December, finishing six lengths astern of Odyssey Moon, the only juvenile to line up in all three legs of this year’s 2YO Triple Crown.

He was sent for a spell immediately before resuming on day one of the Wagga Wagga Cup carnival a fortnight ago.

The son of Sebring found plenty of trouble before running home strongly for a close second behind the Gai Waterhouse-trained Nostariel.

“I was shattered the other day. It was probably the most disappointed I’ve ever been after a race,” Olive said.

Things didn’t exactly go to plan for Bring A Secret on Wednesday, either.

The gelding missed the start, forcing jockey Glyn Schofield to stoke him up in order to find a winnable spot in the TAB Rewards Maiden Plate (1250m).

Punters who backed him from $6 into $4.60 oncourse were holding their breath as Schofield was trying to navigate away from being three back on the rail.

Then, once Bring A Secret got clear running he veered out in a split second, taking Cyrus Rocks off the track.

“He’s got a few little quirks and wandered around the bend, but he’s a big boy and is maybe looking for a bit more ground,” Schofield said.

Olive has nominated Bring A Secret for the Group 1 J.J. Atkins over 1600m at Doomben on June 6 and says if the horse keeps progressing the way he has, the final Group 1 race for juveniles this season will be given serious consideration.

“After his work the other day, I thought we’d come here and just win,” he said. “We’ll get him home and see how he goes but he’s always shown proper ability and if he was to win again, then we’d really give it a thought.”
