Hospital visits have unfortunately taken priority over horses for Bede Murray in the past month, but the optimism he shares about both is almost contagious on the eve of the Scone carnival.

The veteran trainer has been consulting doctors in recent days when a clear preference would be tending to his team after recently announcing he is battling a rare form of stomach cancer.

“I feel good and there’s no change,” Murray said. “I’m just waiting for a call from surgeons to see what they think but I don’t feel any different from what I’ve felt all my life. We’ve just got to work it out, but the horses are keeping me going.”
