ATHERTON trainer Glen Baker on Wednesday pleaded not guilty and was then granted an adjournment to seek legal advice on a charge levelled at him over a cobalt swab returned by his horse French Lesson at Doomben in January.

French Lesson returned samples of 790 micrograms per litre of urine and 846 mg/l following the win, which exceeds the industry threshold of 200mg/l.

Baker told stewards the only explanation he could offer was that the horse was treated with the vitamin supplement VAM in the days leading up to the race.

“In no way or form did I try to boost anything (illegally),” Baker said. “I had no idea about how cobalt works and I was ignorant about it.”

Stewards agreed to Baker’s request to seek legal advice and undertake further research on the science surrounding the rule and set an adjourned hearing date of May 15.

This case differs from that of Jamie McConaghy, which relates to mid-2014, because it came after the January 1 national threshold was introduced.

McConaghy’s case was adjourned last week.

Baker drove two days from Atherton to be present for the hearing.
