MURRAY Bridge horseman Kevin Frew is confident local chaser Nishiazabu will acquit himself well across the border when the Warrnambool Carnival kicks off on Tuesday.

Frew and wife Heather head to the ‘Bool with Nishiazabu, who comes off a solid Oakbank Easter Carnival.

The second-season jumper finished fourth in the Von Doussa Steeplechase behind Thubiaan on Easter Saturday before running third to Lord Of The Song in the Great Eastern on the Monday.

And an impressive trial at the unique Warrnambool circuit under the guidance of veteran rider Paul Hamblin has the stable confident the horse will run well in the $100,000 Brierly Steeple.

“He did really well in his steeple trial at Warrnambool,’’ Frew said.

“I think he’s improved enough (since Oakbank).’’

While the Brierly (3450m) will be his first assignment, Frew said the conditions of Thursday’s epic Grand Annual Steeplechase over 5500m loomed as Nishiazabu’s best chance.

“I think they might be a bit quick for him in the Brierly, but I think he can run top four in the (Grand) Annual),’’ he said.

“The testing Warrnambool track should suit him. He climbed the hill really well in his trial.

“He’s a safe jumper. Paul (Hamblin, rider) said he took him over the jumps.’’

Fellow South Australian Cross Constance will step out in a Maiden Hurdle on Tuesday for trainer Bill Smart, while Adelaide Hills horseman Bill Williams will return to happy hunting ground — but this time on the other side of the fence.

Williams won the 2009 Grand Annual Steeplechase aboard Sir Pentire for Robbie Laing and will have two runners on the flat in Lennybe and Caroun.
