Gleneagles was a comfortable winner of the Group I English 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, England, providing the seventh win in the classic for trainer Aidan O’Brien.
It was the 19th British/Irish classic for champion sire Galileo, although only his second in the 2000 Guineas, after Frankel (2011). Gleneagles was racing for the first time since being first over the line in a Group I in France in October, only to be controversially disqualified after a stewards’ inquiry into interference.
The horse is set to tackle the Group I Irish 2000 Guineas later this month then the Group I St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot next month.
Gleneagles showed quality acceleration in a field of 18 to win by just over two lengths from French visitor Territories, who had finished third in the French race that Gleneagles lost.
Australian-owned colts Home Of The Brave (by Starspangledbanner) and Kool Company (by Jeremy) who had both won important stakes race trials last month for the 2000 Guineas, ran sixth and 13th.
Gleneagles is the second foal of Youresothrilling, a sister to high-class racehorse and sire Giant’s Causeway.
