A teary Joe Cleary knelt and prayed at the feet of Landlocked when he returned to scale after the Wagga Gold Cup. It was momentarily unclear if his worship was meant for the horse Gerry Harvey asked him to pluck out of retirement or racing’s ultimate showman Glen Boss.

“This horse was retired and I received a text message from Claire Bird asking me to train him and Mr Harvey gave me an opportunity,” Queanbeyan-based Cleary said after Landlocked held off a fast-finishing Faust in the $140,000 listed feature. “I love him. He’s a beautiful animal.
