CRANBOURNE-based apprentice Beau Mertens has been riding in races only since September but has been selected to represent Australia in France in June.
Racing Victoria chose the 17-year-old for the Prix Longines Future Rising Stars event at Chantilly on June 14.
Currently completing his third year of RVL’s apprentice training program, Mertens will compete against some of the world’s top apprentices in the 1800m race on the support card of the Prix Diane (French Oaks) meeting.
It will be the first overseas trip for Mertens, who is apprenticed to Mick Kent, and he said he would be excited to ride against Europe’s best young jockeys, as well as representatives from the US and South Africa.
“I was pretty overwhelmed with the news when I was told because it’s an unreal opportunity as an apprentice,” Mertens said. “I was hoping I would get a chance to do one of the overseas trips that happen for Victorian apprentices throughout the year and I can’t be any more excited and thankful to be heading to France.”
Mertens said he had spoken to Australia’s previous Future Stars representatives, Jessica Payne and Patrick Moloney, about what to expect from the experience.
Mertens, who has ridden 31 winners, will be seeking advice from his mentors, as well as from his father, jockey Peter.
