Mark Kavanagh questions cobalt claim

Flemington trainer Mark Kavanagh has questioned how two horses under 24-hour security leading into Group 1 races could return elevated cobalt levels.

Kavanagh, whose Flemington winner from last October — Magicool — is subject of an ongoing investigation by Racing Victoria stewards, opened up on the supplementstopic during a radio interview yesterday.ictoria’s integrity department leading into Group 1 races could exceed the threshold level of 200 micrograms/per litre of urine.

Chief steward Terry Bailey, according to Kavanagh, has stated a horse had to be treated with cobalt on race day to exceed the threshold.

On the 24th anniversary of his retirement from riding over the jumps to concentrate on training thoroughbreds, Kavanagh aired his frustration at losing clients and protested his innocence, even though he has no charges to answer.

‘’We’ve lost horses over it. We’ve had our names tarnished. We’ve been named, blamed and shamed,’’ Kavanagh said on RSN.

‘’We’ve already been punished for something that nobody has actually done.

‘’It’s affected me personally and my business dramatically. Syndicates have taken horses off us and we didn’t buy yearlings in New Zealand or the Sydney Easter sales,’’ the Melbourne Cup and Cox Plate-winning trainer said.

‘’It’s in feed supplements, it’s turned up in swabs and it’s just unfortunate.’’
