NICK Smart and his gifted gelding October Date took another significant step in their Group 1 mission with a courageous, hard-fought triumph in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes at Morphettville.

Though his sights are firmly fixed on the $500,000 South Australian Derby on May 9, Smart was nonetheless thrilled to claim the $115,000 three-year-old feature with his pride and joy.

“That’s his first run in five weeks, so if he was ever going to be vulnerable, today was the day,” an elated Smart said moments after the race.

“Everything we’ve done with him has been aimed at the Derby. So far so good … it all seems to be on track.”

If he hadn’t done so already, October Date certainly stamped himself as a genuine Derby contender with the strength of his Chairman’s win.

The gelding, second favourite at $4.20, locked into a thrilling stretch duel with outsider Maysoor ($71), showing tremendous will to win to prevail by a nose under vigorous riding from Shayne Cahill.

The favourite, the Mark Kavanagh-trained Magicool, missed the start badly and struggled to find galloping room in the straight. His effort to finish midfield was much better than it appeared on paper and he remains a legitimate Derby hope.

The Chairman’s Stakes was run over 2020m and Cahill said he expects October Date to have few problems handling the 2500m staying test of the Derby.

Smart, 30, has followed a meticulous program to prepare October Date for his tilt at Group 1 glory.

The son of Barely A Moment has raced just six times, snaring three wins and a placing. The Chairman’s triumph more than doubled his earnings to almost $140,000.

“I’ve been careful not to rush him,” Smart said.

“We gave him his first start over 1500m and we’ve tried to educate him and teach him to settle.”

October Date underlined his class with a close-up fourth in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley on March 20.

“I’ve also thought he had the makings of a good horse – and that Melbourne trip confirmed it for me,” Smart said.

“He handled everything so well. I think it could end up being the making of him.”
