Wardrobe malfunction: Blake Shinn finishes second on Miss Royale.Wardrobe malfunction: Blake Shinn finishes second on Miss Royale.

Blake Shinn tried his pants off on Miss Royale to win the opening race at Canterbury on Thursday. Literally.

Shinn’s pants fell down in the dash down the straight, resulting in the Melbourne Cup-winning jockey giving most of his rivals the bum steer as Miss Royale finished second behind Defender.

“I was more worried about winning the race. They (the pants) went just after the start and there was nothing I could do,” Shinn said. “I think a lot of people are going to have a bit of fun with this, but they can’t say I wasn’t focused and went to the line.”

Acting chief steward Greg Rudolph said he had never seen anything like it in his time in racing

“He needed a belt at the 200-metre mark,” a Rudolph said. “We usually report gear malfunctions but we are leaving that one alone.”

Meanwhile in Dubai, Miss Royale’s owner Richard Pegum couldn’t work out why his phone started to ring off the hook.

“Did she (Miss Royale) win that well?” he asked when contacted by Fairfax Media. But once he saw the video he understood the drama.

“Well, five wide with his pants down , he never stopped riding as you would expect from Blake,” Pegum said.

The horse that finished third behind Shinn on Miss Royale was appropriately called Modesty.
