Jockeys often make the worst judges, so the old adage goes. Not that anyone is suggesting Tye Angland is a bad assessor, but the John Sargent filly he was desperate to ride in the $1 million Australian Oaks wasn’t Gust Of Wind.

“I obviously pushed hard to ride Thunder Lady as everyone in my position would,” Angland said after the most dour of fillies outstayed her rivals in three-year-old classic. “I was lucky enough to get the booking for the stablemate. That’s the racing game. Thunder Lady jumps nearly equal favourite and mine is 15 or 16-1.”
