AS the reigning Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist is usually the headline act wherever he races — but he has to share centre stage at Royal Randwick tomorrow.

Day Two of The Championships, which boasts four Group 1 races and $10 million prizemoney, has attracted the world racing’s elite to Sydney. There’s the Cox Plate winner Adelaide, England’s popular and much-travelled stayer Red Cadeaux, Japan’s outstanding duo of To The World and Tosen Stardom, Hong Kong champ Dominant, Godolphin’s Group 1 heroes Contributer and Hartnell, last year’s Golden Slipper winner Mossfun, and Sydney’s fan favourite Catkins.

The world’s best jockeys, Hong Kong’s Joao Moreira and Zac Purton, and England’s Ryan
Moore are also here for The Championships, riding against Australia’s best, including James McDonald, Hugh Bowman, Damien Oliver, Glen Boss, Tommy Berry, Craig Williams and Blake Shinn.

It promises to be another spectacular day of thoroughbred racing with Protectionist, winless since the Melbourne Cup last November, getting back to his preferred race distance of 3200m for the $1.6 million Schweppes Sydney Cup.

“Protectionist is a natural stayer and, if this is a genuine staying contest, then he is a winning chance,’’ trainer Kris Lees said.

The John O’Shea-trained Hartnell is favourite for the Sydney Cup while stablemate Contributer also heads betting for Sydney’s richest race, the $4 million Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The first day of The Championships was postponed from last Saturday until Monday because of heavy rain.

But there seems little chance of a repeat of that after a relatively dry week.
