RED Cadeaux will be a surprise starter in the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes instead of the Sydney Cup at Randwick on Saturday.

Trainer Ed Dunlop confirmed the change of plans for the three-time Melbourne Cup runner-up on his blog on his website, Ed Dunlop Racing. The decision was made after deliberations with Red Cadeaux’s owner Ronald Arculli and Dunlop’s travelling foreman Robin Trevor-Jones.

Kerrin McEvoy will take the ride as Hugh Bowman has a committment to Lucia Valentina.

“The weather has been the overriding factor in our decision, with Sydney having experienced an extremely wet week,” Dunlop said. “Although the rain is set to relent in the next few days, Robin and Steve inform me that the track is currently soft. This would put a question mark against Red’s stamina over 2m while Mr Arculli has never been afraid of a challenge!

“Obviously Contributer and Adelaide will be tough to beat, but the Sydney Cup is a vintage renewal in itself with Protectionist, Who Shot Thebarman and the well-weighted Hartnell in the line-up. Hopefully we have made the right call!!”

Red Cadeaux has drawn barrier three in the Queen Elizabeth.

Godolphin’s Contributer remains the $3.40 favourite for Sydney’s richest race despite drawing the outside barrier (13) ahead of Japanese visitor To The World at $4 and Cox Plate winner Adelaide ($7). Red Cadeaux was at $51.

Hartnell, also from the Godolphin operation, is the $2.70 Sydney Cup favourite ahead of Melbourne Cup third placegetter, Who Shot Thebarman at $4.40. Last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist is at $6.
