IS Vancouver a certainty for champion two-year-old honours or has Pride Of Dubai suddenly put himself into contention for the coveted title?

As the unbeaten Golden Slipper winner, Vancouver has the inside running but Pride Of Dubai is mounting a compelling case after securing his second major of the season in the Group 1 $1 million ATC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on Monday.

Pride Of Dubai won the Blue Diamond at Caulfield but had not raced for six weeks leading into the Sires.

It proved a stroke of genius by co-trainers Peter Snowden and his son Paul as Pride Of Dubai became the only juvenile to win multiple Group 1 races this season in a thrilling race.

Typically, the Snowden’s deflected praise back to their colt after he overcame a tough run to score an outstanding win.

“Pride Of Dubai had to show his championship qualities to win,’’ Peter Snowden said.

“I must admit I was very worried mid-race when he was four-wide without cover and possibly because he was a bit fresh, he was over-racing which he has never done before.

“But it is testament to the horse that coming off that break he was still able to find a way to win. He was coming away from them on the line — he’s a very gifted colt.’’

Pride Of Dubai ($4.60) rallied magnificently after being clearly headed by Rageese ($15) at the 200m to fight back and win by three-quarters of a length with Oydssey Moon ($12) dead-heating with Rageese for second.

Golden Slipper runner-up English was backed into $4.20 favouritism but after being with the leaders on the turn she wilted to run sixth.

Champion jockey Hugh Bowman has gone on record as rating Pride Of Dubai among the best juveniles he has ridden and the colt needed to prove that to win the Sires.

“I have a lot of confidence in this horse,’’ Bowman said. “Nothing went smoothly for us today but I was able to keep the horse in a nice rhythm throughout.

“At the top of the straight I could feel the pressure coming, and at the 300m mark I thought I didn’t have a lot left but he reminded me a lot of Hallowed Crown’s recent victories this afternoon.

“He got inside the 200m mark and when I needed him to lift he did. Full credit to him, he had to do it the hard way.

“You can’t take anything away from him, he’s won a Blue Diamond, he had to run through interference in that race and he won well, and he’s come here today and did it the hard way.’’

Pride Of Dubai became the first horse to win the Blue Diamond-ATC Sires Produce Stakes double, a feat that has eluded some outstanding juveniles including Lord Dudley (1975) and Bounding Away (1986), who were both beaten into second place at Randwick.

Snowden said it was a difficult decision to pass up the opportunity to run in the $3.5 million Golden Slipper last month.

“Paul and I thought long and hard about it but we always felt the 1400m was going to suit him better,’’ Snowden said.

“He’s such an exciting colt going forward. I have been lucky enough to work with some good horses and this is what good two-year-olds do, they do things they shouldn’t be doing and they do them with ease.

“Octagonal was never a two-year-old but almost won a Golden Slipper and although I’m not saying this horse is in the same category yet he is doing things he shouldn’t be doing as a two-year-old.

“He’s a big, gross colt and will be so much better next season.”

Snowden is yet to confirm whether Pride Of Dubai will aim for a third major in the Champagne Stakes (1600m) in two weeks.
