TEAM Williams will continue the quest to unearth another Melbourne Cup winner when the latest of its imports, French Derby winner Gallante, makes his debut in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap at Caulfield on Saturday.

Alongside him will be another import on debut, Calvin Williams, owned by Gerry Ryan. Only a fortnight ago, Team Williams produced Observational to win the Bendigo Golden Mile at his first start in Australia.

“As with all these horses we bring to Australia, I have no idea about his prospects until I see him race,” Nick Williams said.

“But he is a nice horse, for sure. He came to us in January with Cups in mind. He is a mile-and-a-half-plus (2400m) galloper who won the French Derby last year.

“He’ll go through his grades here and hopefully he’ll shape up for the Cups in the spring.”

The stallion, who will be ridden by Steven King, has won three of six career starts, including the Group 1 GP De Paris at Longchamp in July last year — France’s Derby.

Ryan is hoping to relive his love affair with a grey French stallion, just like his former star Puissance De Lune, with five-year-old Calvin Williams.

Calvin Williams has won seven of his 19 starts. Trained by Darren Weir, he has won from 1200m to 2000m, including at Listed level in France at 1800m and 2000m.
