WARRNAMBOOL trainer Jarrod McLean and Jervois return to Oakbank this weekend in search of redemption.

Jervois produced the perfect Great Eastern Steeplechase trial when he finished runner-up behind Palmero in last year’s Von Doussa Steeple before injury cost him a start in the Monday’s 4950m feature.

“He had the perfect trial (in the Von Doussa) for the Monday but unfortunately he got a stone bruise,’’ McLean said on RSN yesterday.

While Jervois’ injury saw his rider, McLean’s brother Brad, land the winning pick-up ride in the Great Eastern aboard Lord Of The Song, the 2015 edition has been the long-term target for the horse who started his racing career in South Australia under the care of Richard Jolly.

“This is what he’s been set for,’’ McLean said yesterday

“He’s had a very similar prep to last year.’’

“He’s extremely fit.’’

“He’s a slow horse who is looking at that third lap now and we’re ready to go.’’

McLean said despite Jervois coming off a smart Warrnambool hurdle trial win, it was all about Monday’s Great Eastern for the nine-year-old.

“Brad deliberately didn’t want him to jump the fences before heading over,’’ McLean added. “We elected to go to the hurdle trial for a hit-out and he’s on target.’’

“There looks to be a couple of horses that might be a bit nippy for him in the Von Doussa on Saturday but I’m really looking forward to seeing him on the third lap on Monday.’’

Fellow Victorian trainer Todd Balfour is also heading into Monday’s Great Eastern Steeplechase with a fresh horse in former Western Australian galloper Incentive Scheme, who will school at the famous Adelaide Hills circuit on Thursday.

LEADING Victorian trainer Darren Weir has thrown in late nominations for two Oakbank features with Sharmardashing in the The Advertiser Oakbank Cup and Vain Attraction in the Listed Oakbank Stakes – the race he won last year with Siwa Lady.
