ROYAL Randwick’s The Championships — with the trophy design inspired by a classic Hollywood movie — has turned Sydney’s showpiece autumn horse racing carnival into a truly global event.

Racing NSW chairman John Messara said The Championships, which begin at Royal Randwick on Saturday, has provided Sydney with a sporting and social extravaganza that is being recognised all over the world.

“They are talking about The Championships in Europe, Asia and America,” Mr Messara said.

“This is only the second year of The Championships and it is only going to continue to develop as one of the great international race carnivals.’’

The Championships ambassador Francesca Cumani has been a regular at some of the world’s best race meetings including England’s famous Royal Ascot but she said the next two Saturdays at Randwick is a truly unique, quintessentially Australian racing experience.

“What hits the international visitors is the enthusiasm for racing in this country, there is a huge passion for it here,’’ Ms Cumani said.

The new-look Championships trophies were unveiled by Ms Cumani yesterday and will be awarded to the winners of the 12 Championships races over the next two weeks at Royal Randwick.

The trophies are designed by renowned Sydney jeweller Nic Cerrone and valued at $50,000 each.

“These trophies have been made with passion, not for value,’’ Mr Cerronie said.

Each trophy features a horse’s head and neck as the centrepiece and contains more than 2000 Columbian emeralds, sprinkled with eight-carat black diamonds on the mane, and with two rare white diamonds for eyes.

“I feel the new trophy design captures the energy of the horse in the face and the neck,’’ Cerrone said.

“They are a beautiful and amazing animal and we have tried to show the strength of the thoroughbred in this design.’’

Racing NSW chairman John Messara said the use of emeralds in the trophies is partly due to Sydney being known as “The Emerald City’’.

“The real inspiration for these trophies comes from the movie, The Wizard of Oz,’’ he continued. “The Emerald City is located in the centre of the Land of Oz at the end of the famous yellow brick road.

“The famous Australian playwright David Williamson later used the title Emerald City for his 1987 play about Sydney and the name has stuck ever since.”

The trophies will be awarded to winning connections of the 10 The Championships races, starting this Saturday with the Doncaster Mile, ATC Australian Derby, T.J. Smith Stakes and ATC Sires Produce Stakes.

Then Day Two of the race series, held at Royal Randwick on April 11, features six races in the series — Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Sydney Cup, ATC Australian Oaks, Queen of the Turf Stakes, Arrowfield Sprint and Percy Sykes Stakes.

There will also be a special trophy awarded to the winners of the Country Championships Final (Saturday) and the Provincial Championships (April 11).
