GODOLPHIN gelding Hauraki staked his claim for the ATC Australian Derby and gave jockey James McDonald his fifth winner on the day with a dominant win in the Tulloch Stakes.

Hauraki’s strong finish to his first test at 2000m was a positive indicator that the son of Reset would have no trouble seeing out 2400m at Randwick next Saturday.

“That win will stand him in good stead for the Derby,’’ said former champion jockey and Godolphin spokesman Darren Beadman. “It was a good test for him today, and he’s slowly progressed in the right manner.’’

Hauraki’s win gave James McDonald his fifth winner of the day having earlier scored on Medcaut, Catkins, Generalife and Hartnell. Blake Shinn and Kerrin McEvoy picked up the remaining spoils on the day with two wins each.

Hauraki’s sire, Reset, is an unbeaten son of Zabeel and has thrown an array of high-class middle-distance and classic types from his Darley (VIC) base, including Cox Plate winner Pinker Pinker, VRC Derby winner Rebel Raider and Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner.

Hauraki is sure to have his work cut out against the likes of Rosehill Guineas winner Volkstok’n’barrell and his NZ Derby-winning counterpart Mongolian Khan as well as Victoria Derby hero Preferment in the Derby.

Hauraki’s win capped off a spectacular day for the Godolphin team and, in particular, jockey James McDonald, who booted home five winners.

One of the eye-catching efforts out of the Tulloch came from the Chris Waller-trained Quick Strike, who was doing his best work late on the heels of the placegetters.
