Now that I have your attention, I’ll explain why her name is pertinent regarding the opening race at Terang today.

The debut of four-year-old mare Bel Air Miss will be certain to attract many to tune in to the Terang Co-Op Maiden, race one at 1.20pm over 1006m.

The fact that Dean Yendall has chosen to take the mount is a lead in itself, especially given Darren Weir has Matagami engaged in the race that Yendall has ridden in his two starts to date.

But it’s the breeding page of Bel Air Miss that raises eyebrows. She is by Bel Esprit, the sire of Black Caviar.

Sure, there are plenty of Bel Esprit’s progeny racing and he has been a prolific sire in Victoria for many years now, standing at Eliza Park. Already, he has 98 individual winners (as at 21/3) this season with Bel Sprinter, Afleet Esprit and Iconic winning at Stakes level.

However, it’s the dam side of the pedigree that is full of intrigue. Her dam, Glacial Lass (by Canny Lad) won two races including one at Flemington and has already produced three winners from four foals to race.

Glacial Lass is a half sister to Scandanavia, the mother of Group 1 winner and sire Magnus, Group 2 winners Wilander and Scandiva, and Stakes winners Arctic Flight, Midnight Sun, Frosty The Snowman and Russian Tea Room. Scandanavia is also the dam of Helsinge, the mother of Black Caviar and All Too Hard.

Therefore, Bel Air Miss is a cousin of the 25-start unbeaten superstar Black Caviar. Any relative of Black Caviar, no matter how distant, is enough to get one excited about an otherwise routine Monday meeting in country Victoria.

Even though she hasn’t been seen in public, she is likely to be very safe in the betting markets, especially with the engagement of Dean Yendall.

You can catch the debut run of Bel Air Miss at 1.20pm on Racing Live, SKY or on radio at RSN.
