HORSE racing has been hit with another drug scandal on the eve of Saturday’s prestigious Golden Slipper with two Scone-based horses testing positive to a stimulant believed to be the result of direct contact with methamphetamine.

In the midst of the cobalt saga, The Daily Telegraph understands that stewards have taken further samples from horses in the care of Luke Griffith after initial tests showed traces of the drug commonly known as ice.

Griffith said he was unsure why horses in his care would return “small traces” of the illicit substance and also indicated that Racing NSW officials had tested him and all his staff.

Methamphetamine is a stimulant drug, a more potent form of amphetamine.

In October last year, Tracy Newton was disqualified from training horses for three years after I’m Not Ticklish became the first horse from New Zealand to test positive for methamphetamine. Locally, while several jockeys have fallen foul of methamphetamine in the past, The Daily Telegraph understands this is the first time a horse has tested positive.

It’s understood both horses showed an “irregularity” after racing at Tamworth. Stewards are awaiting the results of the B-Sample. Griffith didn’t want to be directly quoted on the matter when contacted, instead preferring to respect the stewards’ ongoing inquiry.

The news comes on the eve of the landmark cobalt case involving Darren Smith, while Rosehill trainer Sam Kavanagh was charged with offences relating to caffeine and cobalt just over a week ago.

Smith is due to attend Racing NSW headquarters on Friday, where the embattled Newcastle trainer will be sentenced for 17 individual cobalt positives returned in May last year.
