IS Joao Moreira a protected species? Maybe.

Moreira was suspended for causing interference aboard champion Able Friend in Hong Kong last Sunday.

But his three meetings on the bench begins on April 12 — the day after the Queen Elizabeth Stakes meeting at Randwick.

Jockey Brenton Avdulla tweeted: “I’m thinking of riding carelessly over next couple weeks then asking stewards to wait til the carnival is over before I take it.’’

BOSS TREADING WATER IN GOLDEN SLIPPER

GOOD news for dual Golden Slipper-winning jockey Glen Boss, who has picked up the ride on Headwater for Saturday’s race.

Boss tweeted on Tuesday: Thanks to Team Hawkes for the ride on Headwater in the Slipper.

Dwayne Dunn will ride the other Hawkes’ runner Lake Geneva and he was pleased with her barrier draw of five.

“With a bit of luck she could be undefeated. She needed a good barrier to bring her into the race and she should be able to get into the race from there,” Dunn said.

Dunn rides at William Hill Park on Wednesday against his son Dylan in the Macktow Marathon Series (3000m).

Dylan Dunn is on the $3 favourite Rawaq with his father Dwayne on $5 second favourite Duplicity Jones.

Dunn said this will be their third clash in a race with the scoreboard two-nil in his favour at the moment.

WALKER MISSES OUT ON CRITERION RIDE

JOCKEY Michael Walker will miss the ride on Criterion in Saturday’s Group 1 George Ryder Stakes after losing an appeal at the Racing Appeals & Disciplinary board.

Walker, fresh from his first Group 1 win in the Australian Cup for the David Hayes/Tom Dabernig combination, fought to have an eight-meeting suspension shaved by at least a day to take the ride in Sydney.

ROYAL ASCOT PUTS WIND IN SAILS

ROBERT Smerdon-trained Shamal Wind, winner of the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield last month, will bypass the Sydney carnival and instead head to Royal Ascot.

The mare was being aimed at the Group 1 The Galaxy at Rosehill on Saturday but the owners are more interested in the UK trip.

They knocked back an invitation to head to Dubai to contest the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint on March 28.

However the UK — while a huge challenge in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes (1000m) — offered the owners the chance to have the mare served their by a leading stallion before returning home.

TAIYOO GETS WELL-DESERVED HOLIDAY

TOUGH stayer Taiyoo, who lost no admirers with his second in last week’s Adelaide Cup has been spelled.

His trainer Darren Weir said Taiyoo, who has won seven races this season, will be spelled and brought back for races like the Moonee Valley Cup and the Sandown Classic in the spring.

He said it was likely his owners would put an entry in for the Melbourne Cup.

ALL SYSTEMS GO FOR WILLIAM REID

VAIN Queen is primed for a crack at the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200M) at Moonee Valley on Friday week.

The five-year-old mare prepared by John Sadler worked stylishly at Caulfield on Tuesday morning, prompting the trainer to suggest she was in super condition for the feature.

“Everything should suit her beautifully,” he said of the mare who at her previous start won the Group 3 Mumm Stakes (1100m) at Flemington during the carnival.

“She is just a superior galloper when she is kept fresh,” he said.

FURTHER FALLOUT IN BICARB CASE

THE Mark Riley elevated bicarb case has fingered another victim, stablehand Jacklyn Dalton.

She pleaded guilty by the Racing Appeals & Disciplinary Board on Tuesday of giving false/misleading evidence in the case on July 21 last year in the case involving Riley’s galloper Gold For Kev.

Her licence was suspended for three months, while a 12-month ban has been set aside on the condition she does not commit a further breach of the rules of racing in that period.

Ms Dalton was also fined $1000.

BRAKES PUT ON ADELAIDE

COX Plate winner Adelaide will miss Saturday’s George Ryder Stakes and is unlikely to be seen before next month’s $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).

The colt, now trained by Chris Waller, was beaten in a jump out at Rosehill on Tuesday morning by Catkins, prompting international jockey Ryan Moore to enthuse about the gallop but suggest that he did not need a preparatory race before his main autumn target.

23-YEAR DROUGHT ENDS

A 23-YEAR gap between wins for John Keating and Lindsay Park ended on Tuesday when he rode Kristofferson to win at Tatura.

Lindsay Park tweeted his previous winner for them was in the 1991-92 season which was called Charlie’s Comet.

They also tweeted that Keating was an underrated talent.
