Godolphin’s Alpha to head for Breeders’ Cup

USA: Alpha will be steered towards the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita after dead-heating in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday.

Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, who won the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2006 with Invasor, Alpha was winning at Grade 1 level for the first time and will head for the Pennsylvania Derby before the Classic.

Speaking on Godolphin’s website, McLaughlin said: “I will take a dead-heat. At the sixteenth pole, I thought we were second best, then, at the last lunge or two, I thought we got there. Alpha ran very well and I am very proud of him.

“I have talked to Simon [Crisford, Godolphin racing manager] and Alpha is likely to race next in the US$1-million Pennsylvania Derby at Parx on September 22 and then the Breeders’ Cup.”

Godolphin could also be represented in the big climax to the US season with Questing, who destroyed her rivals by nine lengths in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes on her last start.

The Dubai operation have yet to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic, Sakhee coming closest when going down by a nose to Tiznow in 2001.
