The Punter: Fab Frankel still has work to do

Frankel the best horse in the world or all time? Possibly but he still has something to prove in terms of achievement on the track.

He’s an exceptional miler but must do more than just keep beating Excelebration, albeit no mean performer himself.

Frankel was highly impressive in winning the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, but then it was no more than expected on his first race as a four-year-old.

He now heads to Royal Ascot where he should take the Queen Anne Stakes again over a mile as nothing will beat him over this trip.

It’s when stepping up to 1m 2f that any doubts, if there are any, will be put to the test. How about the Eclipse where he might face the likely Derby winner Camelot?

And don’t forget there are plenty Down Under who believe Black Caviar would beat him over seven furlongs and are itching for a match.

It’s unlikely to happen but would be intriguing nonetheless. Both will win their respective races at the Royal meeting and that will crank up the desire for a £1m clash.

Let’s make it clear. Frankel is a very special horse, having notched up a perfect 10 and should be backed at 4/5 to remain unbeaten this season.

He’s evens to be defeated once and 16/1 twice. However, before he wears the mantle of greatest horse ever to set a hoof on turf, he still has a bit of work to do.

Nijinksy, Brigadier Gerard, Mill Reef, See The Stars, Sea Bird, Dancing Brave. Now they deserved to enter the pantheon of greatness, winning Group 1 races from a mile to a mile and a half. There’s no reason why Frankel can’t joint them. But not just yet.
