Jockey Ben Melham will be looking to take a sit behind the leaders when noted speedster Bel Sprinter resumes at Caulfield.

Melham said the Jason Warren-trained sprinter would be improved by the run in Saturday’s Listed United Arab Emirates Stakes (1000m) and that the challenge would be getting him to settle.

“It will be interesting to see how the first couple of furlongs (400m) unfolds,” Melham told Radio Sport National.

“Obviously I am concerned he might want to get racing a little bit fresh.

“He is fit and well but he’s not fully wound up yet and whatever he does he is going to improve on.”

Melham has noted some improvement in Bel Sprinter’s racing manners but he is unsure he will be able to hold up the $2.10 TAB Sportsbet favourite, who is having his first run for five months.

“He still does want to go quite keenly,” Melham said.

“On Saturday there is a little bit of speed drawn outside him with Definitely Ready and probably Faster Son and we’ve got to weigh up what we want to do there.

“Ideally, I would like to pop in behind those two but he’s not a horse you can sort of pull around.

“You have to go with him a little bit.”

Bel Sprinter has won four of his five starts with his only defeat at the end of his last campaign when Lone Rock bloused him in the Group Three Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at Flemington on September 3.

It was his second run down the straight having won over 1100 metres there in July but Melham said the son of Bel Esprit was better suited at Caulfield.

“I have got no doubt he is better suited to racing around a bend,” Melham said.

“He has had a couple of runs up the straight at Flemington and he can just be a bit vulnerable late, especially over six furlongs (1200m) because he sees a bit of daylight and he wants to get running.”

Warren will make a decision after Saturday’s assignment whether Bel Sprinter targets the Group One Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 25 or the Group One Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 10.

“Saturday is an ideal race to kick him off and it will give us a good line on where he is at,” Melham said.

We all know what the Australian racing public think of Black Caviar’s unbeaten winning streak of 17 – but what about 54 undefeated races.

That is the world record for an unbeaten winning stretch by a horse although some may consider it does not apply as it dates back to the 1870s.

A filly / mare born in Hungry named Kincsem, according to Wikipedia, won all of her 54 starts which included a win in the UK in the Goodwood Cup. It is unimaginable that her record will ever be beaten.

Interestingly, Black Caviar is sixth in the world for unbeaten sequence with 17 but in the next month if she wins the Orr Stakes and Futurity Stakes at Caulfield she will be equal second.

She will join the American fillies / mares Peppers Pride and Zenyatta. Peppers Pride retired with 19 unbeaten wins, her last in Decemner 2008, while Zenyatta was unbeaten in 19 starts before in her last race she was beaten in a Breeders Cup race when tested at a m ile for the first time in 2010.

Equal fourth on 18 wins are Eclipse (colt born 1764) and Karayel (horse 1970) so it is interesting should Black Caviar take the Caulfield weight-for-age double that looms in the coming weeks, the top four for unbeaten wins will be mares.

To put into perspective Black Caviar’s amazing achievement is that the next best Australian horse, according to Wikipedia, for consecutive unbeaten runs was Grand Flaneur (colt 1877) with nine from nine.

His major wins in 1880 were the AJC Derby, Melbourne Cup, AJC Mares Produce Stakes, VRC Mares Produce Stakes, Victoria Derby and the 1881 VRC St Leger Stakes.

So, what is the record for consecutive wins by a thoroughbred? – 56 by Camarero, who raced in the 1950s in Puerto Rica. His career stats were 76: 73-2-0.

To the connections of Black Caviar, enjoy your round table lunch on Friday when Black Caviar’s immediate future is determined – stay down under, or, chase the riches and accolades of a world campaign.

HAY LIST ON TARGET FOR LIGHTNING

Wednesday, 1 February 2012:Glyn Schofield put Lightning Stakes-bound Hay List through his paces at Gosford on Wednesday as the comeback sprinter continued his build up towards a race return.

Hay List impressed with a four-length barrier trial win over 1000m at Randwick last Friday and Schofield said the dual Group One winner had taken another step forward since that trial.

“He went nicely this morning and has progressed well since his trial last week,” Schofield said.

“He’s obviously tightened up with each piece of work and I was very happy with him this morning.

“I think he’s going to have another trial and that will show us exactly where he’s at. But at the moment I’m very happy and there are no problems.”

The John McNair-trained Hay List is set to make his first race appearance since May in the Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 18.

However, Schofield could face a dilemma.

He is also the jockey of Manawanui who could resume in the Royal Sovereign Stakes in Sydney on the same day.

Trainer Ron Leemon, who prepares Group One winner Manawanui, will also nominate his charge for Saturday week’s Expressway Stakes (1200m).

Leemon has said he will make a decision on whether Manawanui resumes against the older horses after seeing the Expressway field and after Manawanui barrier trials in Sydney on Tuesday.

If Manawanui starts in the Expressway it will avoid a clash for Schofield.

Schofield partnered Manawanui in work on Tuesday morning and is also delighted with the Golden Rose winner’s progress.

“Again, he’s tightened since his first trial and he has another one next week so both horses are on track,” Schofield said.

“We’ll just have to wait and see where the two horses go.

“There’s a long way to go yet but from my perspective both horses are lining up towards their races in good shape.”

MORNINGTON trainer Jason Warren resisted pushing on with Bel Sprinter in the spring and expects to reap the benefits in the autumn.

Bel Sprinter returns at Caulfield on Saturday in the 1000m United Arab Emirates Stakes for a campaign that will determine whether the four-year-old can live up to his potential as one of the best sprinters in the land.

In five starts last winter, Bel Sprinter won the first four before he suffered he was defeated by Lone Rock in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at Flemington.

“He did a really good job at his first serious preparation and I was mindful of the horse’s longevity, so it was best to put him out,” Warren said yesterday.

“He’s going terrifically. I’m very happy with him. He’s had one jumpout at Sandown, last Friday, and he went really well,” he said. “He’s primed and ready to go.”

TAB Sportsbet has Bel Sprinter as $2 favourite for Saturday’s Listed race.

“Obviously he’s got to live up to expectations on Saturday, and if he does we will go to the Oakleigh Plate and, depending on that, then the Newmarket would be an option,” Warren said.

“We’ll take it one run at a time, but depending on how he is going the feature sprints in Sydney also come into play.”

He said Bel Sprinter had put on 30kg since his last campaign.

Warren will run first-starter Pronto Pronto in Saturday’s Emirates Airline Stakes.

“He’s had a couple of jumpouts and he’s looked good, but I would have preferred putting him in an official trial,” he said.

Pronto Pronto was one of 64 third declarations for the Blue Diamond.

BLACK Caviar is fast becoming more valuable than the ridiculously expensive delicacy she is named after.

Yes, those little black fish-eggs are worth just as much as the invincible horse that has 17 wins from 17 starts.

Putting an exact figure on the unbeaten mare, the fastest horse in the world and the darling of Australian sport, isn’t easy but bloodstock agents believe she could easily fetch $6 million if she walked into a sale ring tomorrow.

Black Caviar is a beast of an animal, a galloper that tips the scales at around 600kg.

At that weight, her value is on par with beluga caviar – farmed from sturgeon fish out of the Caspian Sea and viewed as the epitome of grandeur.

Commonly known as “black” caviar because of its dark colour, beluga is $10,000 a kilogram wholesale.

Black Caviar’s part-owner Pam Hawkes, a lover of caviar, is responsible for the naming of the mighty mare.

“Helsinge, the name of Black Caviar’s mother, was in Scandinavia and that’s where the salmon live. It made sense,” she said.

The invincible mare already has $4.5 million in the bank and should add another $250,000 to that figure next Saturday in the Orr Stakes.

Following that she will be in the box seat for the winner’s share of $500,000 in the Futurity Stakes on February 25 and then her plans are up in the air until embarking on a trip to Royal Ascot in June.

Jonathan D’arcy, bloodstock agent and director of Inglis sales company, believes the hype surrounding Black Caviar makes her difficult to value.

“The starting point off the track, what she is worth as a broodmare, would have to be around $4 million,” he said.

“Samantha Miss made $3.85 million and regardless of her pedigree, it would be easy to say without doubt that she would make at least that figure.

“Bidding would probably start around that price and then get up to around $6 million or maybe even $8 million.

“She could go anywhere in the world and win races and a lot more prizemoney, that is undeniable. I think around the $6 million mark is about what she would be worth.

“Broodmares can only have one foal per year, their earning capacity is limited.

“But with a horse like Black Caviar it would come down to who wants to buy her.

“It would become a battle of egos so to speak and if you had two powerful owners wanting to buy her than her price could skyrocket.”

JUST as the all-conquering Black Caviar is the talking point of world racing, the champion mare’s younger half-brother, All Too Hard, was yesterday under notice when a surprise third declaration for the $1 million Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield on February 25.

All Too Hard is yet to race, but trainer John Hawkes is pleased with the two-year-old’s progress since coming into work at Flemington.

”He’s been paid up for the Diamond, but I think we will run out of time getting him to the race,” Hawkes said. ”It’s a bit quick at this stage to make a race like the Blue Diamond but, having said that, he’s a nice horse on the way up.

”While he’s not far away from a barrier trial I think time will beat us when it comes to the Diamond.”

All Too Hard was purchased by Hawkes Racing on behalf of Patinack Farm for $1,025,000 at the Sydney Easter Yearling sales last year after going head-to-head for the colt with Black Caviar’s trainer, Peter Moody, on behalf of the mare’s owners.

The colt is the third foal out of Black Caviar’s dam, Helsinge, with the other, Moshe, a winner of three of his first four starts before he was struck down by injury.

In what was the strongest third declaration for the group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200 metres) for five years, 64 juveniles remain in contention for Victoria’s premier two-year-old race.

Nathan Tinkler’s Patinack Farm has nine gallopers still in the race. Patinack Farm, which sponsors the Blue Diamond, entered 178 two-year-olds for the race in July last year.

Five-time winning trainer David Hayes has eight left in the mix, including Redoute’s Choice filly Mama’s Choice, who makes her debut at Caulfield on Saturday in the Emirates Airlines Stakes.

Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley operation, which took the Blue Diamond last year with Sepoy, paid up for six youngsters but none will race this weekend.

Rhind hoping fillies can measure up 15 / 07 / 2011

TWO weeks ago trainer Vicki Rhind would have rated her two-year-old Our Aristotle a better chance of winning on debut than stablemate Bel Price but yesterday she reversed her preference.

According to Rhind Bel Price (Bel Esprit-Kel Price) has come on in leaps and bounds since her narrow trial win in Hobart last month and considers her a better chance of winning on debut than her stablemate.

That was before Bel Price ran three times on a wet track.

CAVIAR EDGES CLOSER TO RECORD

Tuesday, 31 January 2012: World champion sprinting mare Black Caviar continued her unbeaten run recording back to back wins in the G2 Australia Day Stakes over 1200m at Moonee Valley on Friday night, in effortless fashion by just over four lengths to register her 17th consecutive victory.

Her winning margin was one of the biggest in the history of the race and could easily have been several lengths more had Luke Nolen desired.

That said, Black Caviar hardly raised a sweat in sweeping aside what could only be described as sub standard G2 opposition and under the circumstances she was never going to threaten her master Timeform rating of 135+. To be brutal about the performance, it was a track gallop.

Black Caviar’s second Australia Stakes win has been assessed as a 128+ Timeform rated performance, some three pounds superior to her win in the 2011 renewal but seven pounds shy of her master Timeform rating.

Black Caviar’s winning time of 1:09.44 was 0.15 seconds outside of champion sprinter Miss Andretti’s course record set in her 2006 Manikato Stakes victory. There is little doubt that had Black Caviar been pushed out she would have easily bettered that record time.

The march towards 20 straight wins continues in a fortnight when Black Caviar then tackles 1400m for the first time in the G1 Orr Stakes, where she will undoubtedly meet much better opposition.
