World Champion Sprinter Black Caviar was back in her usual breathtaking style at a jam packed Moonee Valley in Melbourne tonight, notching up her 17th straight win from as many starts in the Group Two MVRC Australia Stakes (1200m) in a super slick 1:09,44.

Thousands of people flocked to the valley to catch a glimpse of the great mare, leading to the Moonee Valley Racing Club having to swing open the front gates and let the growing crowd surge into the venue free of charge after lines at ticket booths became too long to service.

Fans were not let down, with the undefeated superstar settling two lengths behind the leaders before unleashing her trademark blistering turn of foot coming to the 600m mark before cruising home four lengths ahead of fellow Inglis Melbourne Premier graduate Zedi Knight.

Black Caviar’s time for the 1200m was just 0.15 seconds outside the track record set by subsequent Royal Ascot conqueror Miss Andretti back in 2006.

“Great to see her back, attitude is good, action is terrific, hopefully it’s the start of a wonderful six months”, said trainer Peter Moody.

“She is just terrific for our sport, she’s puts us on the front page for all the right reasons”, Moody added.

Bred by Rick Jamieson’s Gilgai Farm Black Caviar ($210,000 2008 Premier, 5m Bel Esprit-Helsinge)(pictured as a yearling) was purchased by Moody at the 2008 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Swettenham Stud.

Swettenham Stud will bring another strong group of 29 yearlings to this year’s Premier Sale which will be conducted over four days from Monday February 27 to Thursday March 1.

39 yearlings by Black Caviar’s sire Bel Esprit are set to go under the hammer at the sale.

Eliza Park Stud, the home of Bel Espirt, has 64 yearlings catalogued for the Melbourne showcase.

Inglis will be gathering all those involved in Black Caviar’s career for the naming of the Black Caviar Bar at Oaklands ahead of her next start in the Group One MRC C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 11.

“We are looking forward to having all the people associated with the superstar mare including her owners, trainer, jockey, breeder, consignor and stable staff all at Inglis’ Melbourne sales complex in the coming fortnight for the naming of the Black Caviar Bar in recognition of her amazing feats”, said Inglis Bloodstock Director Peter Heagney.

AN excited crowd crammed into Moonee Valley to witness another chapter of the Black Caviar story and got just what they expected.

Chasing her 17th successive victory in the Group II Australia Stakes, the great mare made it six from six at the Valley and 13 from 13 over the 1200m trip.

And she did it with seeming ease and a minimum of fuss.

Sent out at the prohibitive odds of $1.05, Black Caviar gave Luke Nolen an armchair ride leading from barrier one on jumping away but letting Zedi Knight ($31) slide to the front soon after.

Nolen bided his time in second place and the world’s best sprinter cruised up to Zedi Knight on the home turn and let rip in the straight to score by 4-3/4 lengths with her stablemate Doubtful Jack ($51) a further 4-1/2 lengths away third.

“She’s terrific for our sport. Melbourne is probably the greatest sporting city in the world and to see people turn out and enjoy the evening like this is just tremendous,” Moody said.

“It’s just great for our industry. We need it. Racing often gets a kicking to death on the front page of the newspapers. This mare gets us on the front page for the right reasons.

“It’s great to be a part of it.”

Black Caviar’s time of 1:09.44 was just 0.15s outside the course record held by Miss Andretti and set in the 2006 Manikatro Stakes.

Miss Andretti went on to win the King’s Stand Stakes (1000m) at Royal Ascot.

A seven-time Group I winner and earner of a tick over $4.5 million in stakes, Black Caviar equalled Hong Kong superstar sprinter Silent Witness’s record of 17 straight wins and is now only two wins off the Australasian record of 19 held by Gloaming and Desert Gold.

“It’s great to see her back,” Moody said.

“Her attitude is good, her action is terrific so hopefully it’s the start of a wonderful six months.”

Moody confirmed Black Caviar’s next start would be in the Group I C F Orr Stakes at Caulfield on February 11, her first attempt at 1400m.

Plans are to take the five-year-old daughter of Bel Esprit to England for the Golden Jubilee Stakes (1200m) at Royal Ascot and the July Cup (1200m) at Newmarket, after the Orr, the Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield and maybe one other run here.

“There’s a race for her every Saturday on the eastern seaboard of Australia and most parts of the world for the next six months,” Moody said.

“But we are going to sit down next Friday with the owners and have a meeting and that will tell us a bit more and get eveyone’s gut feeling.

“But I’m just pleased to enjoy tonight and have her back on track.”

Nolen indicated the Black Caviar could have broken the track record if he really put her to the sword but there was no need to overtax her.

“Obviously combined with her awesome talent, her giant stride and her relaxed attitude are the reasons she is such a champion,” he said.

“I’m not going to say she’s better than she was but she’s physically mature now and she felt strong underneath me.

“It’s a wonderful privilege to be on top of Black Caviar. I thank God every day,” he said.

MVRC chief executive Michael Browell said the club had expected about 8000 people but was so overwhelmed with long queues that it opened the gates and gave free entry to many of the waiting people with the final crowd estimated at 15,000.

Black Caviar serves up sprint masterclass

Black Caviar notched her 17th straight victory with the minimum of fuss in the Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley.

The great Antipodean mare is second to Frankel in the official worldwide ratings and a big crowd had gathered just to see her run.

Jockey Luke Nolen settled the unbeaten six-year-old in third early one and asked Peter Moody’s charge to quicken turning for home.

Under minimum pressure, she changed gear within a matter of strides before stretching clear of Zedi Knight for a comfortable win.

The dream is that Black Caviar turns up at Royal Ascot in June to take on the best Europe has to offer.

In preparation, Moody is due to step her up to seven furlongs next time in the CF Orr Stakes at Caulfield on February 11.

Moody said: “Hopefully it’s the start of a wonderful six months.

“It’s wonderful to see her back in great shape.

“She’s just terrific for our sport, and it’s great for our industry.

“This filly puts us (racing) on the front page for the right reasons.”

Nolen said: “This wasn’t the strongest opposition she’s met, but she relaxed nicely off an even speed.

“I’m not going to say she was better than she was, but she wouldn’t have to improve.”

BLACK CAVIAR took her unbeaten run to 17 as she sauntered home, pulling clear of her rivals with ease and powering home to win under a motionless Luke Nolen.

The atmosphere at Moonee Valley was electric, with racegoers in the packed stands cheering loudly as the Peter Moody-trained mare, ranked second in the world behind only Frankel earlier this month in the World Thoroughbred Rankings, walked out onto the track.

Those jockeys present who weren’t riding in the race were gathered on the steps of the stewards tower to gain a vantage point to watch the world’s best mare strut her stuff and she did not disappoint.

While the standard of opposition was not the most taxing she has faced, the 1-25 favourite could not have made lighter work of her opposition, travelling strongly off the home bend as her rivals toiled before stretching clear under minimal pressure from the saddle.

Moody said: “It’s probably the fittest I’ve had her first time up and it’s great to see her back. She’s been pleasing us at home and it was great to see her do that.

“You could use the word unextended but she’s done it in a good time and we’ll go to Caulfield [on February 11 - the CF Orr Stakes] next. We’ll take it one race at a time but we’ll have a meeting next Friday and discuss what everyone is feeling after digesting that.”

With a trip to Royal Ascot on the cards and the possibility of running on Dubai World Cup night, Moody added:  “Hopefully it’s the start of a wonderful six months. “It’s wonderful to see her back in great shape.
